What is Average Trainability for a Hound?Puppy ClassWell I'm very smart and very quick to learn. I also have the famed hound independence. At the end of my first month with Mom and Dad, I was pretty much aware of the house rules and ready to face the world, or at least other pups in our Puppy Obedience Class. So at the tender age of 3-1/2 months, I started school. Basic ObedienceBy the ripe old age of 5 months, I had passed my puppy class with flying colors. The next step was a Basic Obedience Class. Mom was a little worried that at 5 months I might be too young, but on the other hand this class would take us through the beginning of my adolescence. She figured an obedience class at this time might not be a bad idea. As it turned out, there were other young dogs in this class too and once again I did great. Basic Again? At 1 year, I was still in my adolescence and didn't always want to pay attention to Mom and Dad. So rather than trying to continue on to a more advanced class, we found another basic class to help re-enforce what we had learned. Mom wanted me to have all this basic stuff down before we moved on to any more advanced training. At that point, Mom's ultimate goal was to have a nice, well-mannered dog. Perhaps one that could pass the AKC's Canine Good Citizen (CGC) test. I can do that. Intermediate ObedienceWell I have this basic stuff down pretty good, but Mom thinks I'm getting lazy and not trying to think about commands anymore. She thinks I need a new challenge. I try to get my poodles to arm wrestle, but they just ignore me. Canine Good CitizenWell I'm now 2.5 years old. Mom wanted me to take the CGC test long ago, but we haven't found anyone local giving the test. But now we found a place close to Grandma's that offers the test 2-3 times per year. Hopefully we can make one of those sessions. |
